Ayyam-e-Aza: The Last Few Days

Saturday, March 14th, 2009

We landed in Karachi on 24th Safar. Slept the whole day then went to attend a majlis that night. Being held in commemoration of the martyrdom of the Holy Prophet (S.A.W.W.) and Imam Hasan (A.S.) on the same day, 28th Safar, it was part of a Khamsa (group of five majalis) to be addressed by Zameer Akhtar on the tale of ‘grandfather and grandson’. I missed the first one but joined from the second. I was relieved to see Zameer Akhtar back in full form and better than ever. And I also learned that it was Muawiyah (L.A.) who opted for a truce with Imam Hasan (A.S.) rather than the other way round.

Two days later, I delivered the Tabarrukat that I brought for him from Syria. There I saw Haider Rizvi, owner of TV Today. He had come to convince Zameer Akhtar to speak on his channel against the attackers. Zameer Akhtar told him to wait till after the 8th of Rabi-ul-Awwal, when the Ayyam-e-Aza would end. Three other channels had already made an offer to him and he told them all to wait.

Days passed with the same routine. I got the video of the annual majlis of Karavan-e-Murtaza and watched it. Shaukat Raza Shaukat brought the roof crashing down with his verses on Hazrat Abu Talib (A.S.).

Khamsa ended on the eve of 28th, but there was a seperate majlis on the same topic the next night as well. There I got to decorate the Taboot of Imam Hasan (A.S.), the same one that was used for Imam Husain (A.S.) on the eve of Ashurah but with a green covering this time. Green is the color that is associated with Imam Hasan (A.S.), red with Imam Husain (A.S.). The special feature this time were the protruding arrows from the Taboot to signify the arrow-riddled Janaza of Imam Hasan (A.S.) that was prevented from burial beside the Holy Prophet (S.A.W.W.) by the “Ummah” who attacked it.

The next day, the ash’ara at Qasr-e-Musayyab started on the topic of “Imamat and Azadari”. In the second majlis, Zameer Akhtar shook all of Rizvia Society with his speech. I kept teasing my sister for the next couple of days on what she missed.

On Saturday night, Zameer Akhtar addressed a Shab-Baidaari on the topic of the History of Azadari. After that I planned to go meet him but my father brought me home.

I missed the majlis on the fifth as I went to the Alvidai juloos at Imam Bargah-e-Tanzeem-ul-Momineen where we decorate and bring out Baadshah every year. One thing I wanna say here is, never touch a horse between the ears from behind and never stand near his rear legs. You’ll get a free ticket to America if you do, but someone will have to collect your pieces from all over the country.

Baadshah in juloos from Tanzeem-ul-MomineenBaadshah with my cousin Haider.

Baadshah was well-behaved and more sober this time, unlike last year when he got scared of the rising Alams. It’s awesome to run with him when he starts jump-trotting. And keeping his size in mind, it makes you look really brave and cool, even if you’re terrified inside and pleading with Allah to make him stop. But Baadshah don’t listen to Allah Mian either. ;)

I was planning to do both Zanjeerzani and Qamazani at the end of the juloos but my nincompoop of a cousin above failed to get my tokas sharpened. Bloody &#@*()*#! So I postponed my “Grand Sunday Plans” to Thursday night for the Alvidai Matamdari at Imam Bargah-e-Baab-e-Askari.

The next three days went by smoothly, Thursday arrived. At night there was Nazar at my Phuppo’s. Got too late there so I had to skip another majlis and went straight for the Matamdari.

Haider and I picked up our Zanjeers from his friend who had gotten them sharpened. His were “talwars” or sword like zanjeers. There I came to know that my tokas had become really popular among the guys and everyone wished to do matam with them because they were the right size and shape and good for inducing deep cuts. They asked me to switch my zanjeers with them. My reply: “Chal be!” My tokas were celebrities!

Khair we went for the Matamdari. It started around half past twelve. I did matam for around ten minutes when my head began to spin. I stepped aside and another cousin Abbas (in pic above with folded hands) dried my back up with my shirt. So much for Zanjeerzani. And I didn’t even come around to Qama. Crap!

I kept thinking it was due to my reduced intake of food but Haider later came and told me it was because of the two Ghulam Latifs I’d had before the matam. Man, I hate John Player! Better to stick with DLs.

Nevertheless, I took advantage of the Nazar afterwards and drank three glasses of Lassi from the Sabeel to stuff myself. Came back to Haider’s place and we both went to sleep but not before we had made videos of our backs. ;)

Would anyone like to see? :P

Khair, I came back home the next morning, took a bath and then left again for the Chup Taazia juloos from Qasr-e-Musayyab. Went straight to Rizvia Imambargah where Baadshah was brought. He was first given a bath to clean up all the sweat from running. It’s fun to watch him try to drink it all up when they wash his face. (You can find the video on my Facebook profile.)

Then he was decorated and taken to join the procession from Qasr-e-Musayyab.

I walked Baadshah for some time in the juloos, then I left for the last majlis of Ayyam-e-Aza, back at Rizvia Imam Bargah. It was the majlis of the Barsi of Allama Zameer Akhtar’s mother. There I joined in decorating the Taboot of Imam Hasan Askari (A.S.)  and then carried it out into the crowd after the majlis.

We all bid farewell to Imam Husain (A.S.) and appologized for the lack of our efforts to commemorate and condemn the terrible attrocities on him and his family. Time passed quickly, maghrib arrived and Ayyam-e-Aza ended.

Eid-e-Zehra (S.A.) began.

The Month in which Allah decorated Karbala: Sha’ban-ul-Muazzam!

Wednesday, August 6th, 2008

The month of Rajab has passed us by and the month of Sha’ban is upon us.

Most of us recognize the importance of this month as the one in which Imam Husain (A.S.) and Imam Mehdi (A.S.) were born. But that’s not all. The month of Sha’ban is associated with the births of other important personalities as well, all of whom were either martyred in Karbala or taken prisoner.

Courtesy: Syed Awn Husain Rizvi

So here are the dates in chronological order:

3rd Sha’ban, 4 AH – Date of Birth of Imam Husain (A.S.), second son of Hazrat Ali (A.S.) and Lady Fatimah Zehra (S.A.), and younger grandson of Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W.W.).

1st Sha’ban, 5 AH – Date of Birth of Lady Zainab (S.A.), eldest daughter of Hazrat Ali (A.S.) and Lady Fatimah Zehra (S.A.), and older granddaughter of Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W.W.).

4th Sha’ban, 28 (or 26) AH – Date of Birth of Hazrat Abbas (A.S.), son of Hazrat Ali (A.S.) from Lady Fatimah-e-Kilabia (Ummul-Baneen) (S.A.), flag-bearer of the Husaini (A.S.) men in Karbala.

5th Sha’ban, 44 AH – Date of Birth of Hazrat Ali Akbar (A.S.), second son of Imam Husain (A.S.) from Lady Umme-Laila (S.A.).

7th Sha’ban, 47 AH – Date of Birth of Hazrat Qasim (A.S.), youngest son of Imam Hasan (A.S.) from Lady Umme-Farwah (S.A.). Imam Hasan (A.S.) is the older brother of Imam Husain (A.S.), eldest son of Hazrat Ali (A.S.) and Lady Fatimah Zehra (S.A.), and eldest grandson of Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W.W.).

15th Sha’ban, 256 AH – Date of Birth of Imam [Aali-Maqaam Al-Hujjat-ul-Qaim] Mehdi (A.S.), last Imam in the Progeny of Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W.W.), in the lineage of Imam Husain (A.S.).

It won’t be wrong to say that Karbala was decorated by Allah in the month of Sha’ban as some of the most important personalities of Karbala [Imam Husain (A.S.), Lady Zainab (S.A.), Hazrat Abbas (A.S.), Hazrat Ali Akbar (A.S.) and Hazrat Qasim (A.S.)] were born in this month.

Not only this but Allah also sent, in Sha’ban, the One who is going to avenge the bloodshed of Imam Husain (A.S.) and his Family (A.S.) in Karbala, the last Imam, Imam Mehdi (A.S.).

Another important thing I would like to state here is that mentioning Imam Mehdi (A.S.) by name is strictly forbidden. Please refer to him only by his titles.

Leaving the Prophet’s (S.A.W.W.) Madinah

تیرے شہر سے جاتے ہیں، دے ہم کو دعا نانا

The Holy Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W.W.) was sitting with his young grandson, Husain (A.S.), and granddaughter, Zainab (S.A.), sitting in front of him. Suddenly, tears started streaming down his face.

Husain (A.S.) asked him, “Grandfather, why are you crying?”

The Prophet replied, “Jibraeel is here. He just told me that you will be slaughtered in Karbala in the way of Allah and is asking for my approval on it.”

Husain (A.S.): “Nana (Grandfather), I accept!”

Prophet (S.A.W.W.): “Water will be stopped for three days…”

Husain (A.S.): “Nana, I accept!”

Prophet (S.A.W.W.): “Your friends and family will be killed…”

Husain (A.S.): “Nana, I accept!”

Prophet (S.A.W.W.): “Your son Ali Akbar (A.S.) will die in your arms…”

Husain (A.S.): “Nana, I accept!”

Prophet (S.A.W.W.): “Your brother Abbas’s (A.S.) arms will be cut off…”

Husain (A.S.): “Nana, I accept!”

Prophet (S.A.W.W.): “Your six-month old infant Ali Asghar (A.S.) will be slaughtered by an arrow…”

Husain (A.S.): “Nana, I accept!”

Prophet (S.A.W.W.): “Your sister Zainab’s (S.A.) chaadar (head cover) will be snatched…”

Husain (A.S.) did not speak.

Zainab (S.A.): “My brother Husain (A.S.), I accept!”

**************

In 60 AH, Muawiya (L.A.) died and his son Yazid (L.A.) captured the throne in Damascus and claimed to be the defacto ruler of the Muslim world. People from all over the Muslim world came for his Bayaah, or Bayat (paying allegiance). But Imam Husain (A.S.) did not.

After Hazrat Ali (A.S.), Imam Hasan (A.S.) became Caliph but he gave it to Muawiya (L.A.) after only four months to save the Muslims from division. But he stated in the deal made with Muawiya (L.A.) that when Muawiya (L.A.) dies, the Caliphate would come back to him, or in the case of his passing, to Imam Husain (A.S.).

Muawiya (L.A.) had Imam Hasan (A.S.) poisoned and martyred by bribing his wife Jauda (L.A.), daughter of Ash’as (L.A.) , son of Shees (L.A.). So on Muawiya’s (L.A.) death, the Caliphate was Imam Husain’s (A.S.) right. But Muawiya (L.A.) appointed Yazid (L.A.) as his successor before death.

Even though Imam Husain (A.S.) never made any claims for the throne, yet Yazid (L.A.) feared his popularity with the people and knew someday the people would ask for him to step down for Imam Husain (A.S.).

It is necessary here to mention that Muawiya (L.A.) and Yazid (L.A.) were drinkers, tyrants and indulged in sexual sins. Even more important is the fact that they denounced Prophet Muhammad’s (A.S.) Prophethood openly by saying:

There was no Wahi (revelation), it was only a sham (nauzobillah) by the Bani Hashim (A.S.).

With fear of being dethroned in his mind and the want of disgracing Islam by dishonoring the Prophet’s (S.A.W.W.) grandson, having no regard for the Prophet or Allah openly, Yazeed asked Imam Husain for his Bayat (to pay allegiance to him) or be beheaded.

With Yazeed (L.A.) and his forefather’s records of infidelity and polytheism, the question of Imam Husain’s (A.S.) allegiance became one of the very survival of Islam. If Imam Husain (A.S.) had paid his allegiance to Yazid (L.A.), it would have meant his acceptance of the above mentioned claims of the Bani Umayyah (L.A.) that Islam was a farce (nauzobillah) and claims of Prophethood by Muhammad (S.A.W.W.) were false. Why would the people have trusted in Islam and Allah when even the grandson of the Prophet (S.A.W.W.) was submitting to Yazid (L.A.)? It’s no wonder that Imam Husain (A.S.) refused to bow to Yazid’s (L.A.) fancies. Imam Husain (A.S.) ordered his brother Abbas (A.S.) to prepare to leave Madinah. He took with him, almost all women and children to prove that he did not want to fight and it was Yazid (L.A.) who wanted bloodshed.

He headed to Makkah with the intention of performing Hajj. There he learned that Yazid’s (L.A.) people were lurking in the form of Hajis (pilgrims) to kill him so he changed his Hajj plans to Umrah and left Makkah. He headed to Kufah but on the way he learned of Yazid’s governor Ubaidullah (L.A.)’s [son of Ziyad (L.A.)] massacre of those who wanted to help him.

One of Yazid’s (L.A.) armies met him on the way. Their water had finished and people and animals alike were thirsty. Imam Husain (A.S.) ordered for their thirsts to be satiated and even the animals to be given water. But later on, this same army stopped him from going towards Kufah and diverted him towards Karbala.

When the caravan reached Karbala on the 2nd of Muharram, 61 AH, Imam Husain (A.S.) remarked:

“This is the promised land where our blood shall be spilled!”

Imam Husain (A.S.) ordered the tents to be erected on the bank of the river Euphrates (Furaat). On the 4th of Muharram, the camps of Husain (A.S.) were forced by to be removed from the banks of the river by the Yazidi (L.A.) armies which had begun to arrive. On the 7th of Muharram, water was stopped from reaching the Husaini (A.S.) camps and the Yazidis (L.A.) took the riverbanks under their control.

Imam Husain (A.S.) tried many times to convince the Muslims against shedding the blood of the Prophet’s (S.A.W.W.) family, to try to save them from the humiliation that would follow but they did not listen. On the 10th day of Muharram, known by the name of Ashurah, Yazidi (L.A.) armies forced the battle onto Imam Husain’s (A.S.) caravan.

One by one, all men, except one, in the Husaini (A.S.) camp were martyred including Husain’s (A.S.) eighteen year old son Ali Akbar (A.S.) [who resembled the Prophet (S.A.W.W.) and people used to come from far and wide to look at him], extremely devoted brother Abbas (A.S.) [who always called Husain (A.S.) 'Master'], six month old infant Ali Asghar (A.S.), etc. Husain (A.S.) was slaughtered in the state of prostration to Allah during the Asr prayer, after he had put his sword back in its sheath, to pray.

The chaadars (head covers/veils) of all women were snatched and the tents of the Husaini (A.S.) camp burned. Women and children were made prisoners and taken to Damascus, Syria, on foot. The sole surviving man was Ali Zain-ul-Abideen (A.S.), the eldest son of Husain (A.S.) and the fourth Imam, who was weak and unconscious from illness at the time.

However, the Husaini (A.S.) men did not go down easy. Martyrdom was their ultimate goal but not before they had caused a huge blow to the enemy’s forces. As the imprisoned Lady Zainab (S.A.) stated in her sermon in the court of Yazid (L.A.):

“O Ruler of Syria! Go out into the streets and you will not find a single house that the Sword (Zulfiqar) of my Brother has spared from which the wails of mourning can not be heard.”

**************

Husain’s (A.S.) caravan lost 72 men. Even these were not all men. Many were of the age 7-14 and Ali Asghar (A.S.) was only six-months old.

According to one account, Yazid’s (L.A.) forces numbered 900,000. Only 80,000 returned alive!

According to another account, Yazidis (L.A.) totaled 460,000. All of Husain’s (A.S.) men killed 25,000 Yazidis (L.A.), Husain’s (A.S.) brother Abbas (A.S.) killed 25,000 while Husain (A.S.) himself sent 330,000 Yazidis (L.A.) to Hell. Total is 380,000 which leaves 80,000 to return home.
