Martyrdom of Sakinah(S.A.)

Today, the 3rd of Safar, according to the lunar calendar, marks the martyrdom anniversary of Husain(A.S.)’s daughter Sakinah(S.A.) at the age of around five years. She died in the dungeon where the survivors of the family of Husain(A.S.) and his friends were imprisoned by Yazid after the event of Karbala.

The women in the surrounding areas used to come to the dungeon gate where Sakinah used to tell them the tale of Karbala. When she did not show up one day and the women learned of her martyrdom, they went home and forced their men into a revolt against Yazid that in turn forced him to release the captives of Karbala. According to her older brother, Ali Zain-ul-Abideen(A.S.), the sole surviving man of Karbala from Husain’s camp:

Sakinah, Shareekat-us-Sani-e-Zehra, is the conqueror of Sham(Syria).

Sakinah was buried in the same dungeon. Later, her body was moved to where it is now due to water entering her grave.
