To me the only reason why the opposition parties resigned before the election is that they knew they were gonna lose! The government alliance dominates the national and provincial assemblies and Musharraf would still have won even if they had voted. They resigned, so they could say that Musharraf’s re-election was not valid on moral grounds. Their points:
- The president can not be elected by the same assemblies twice.
- Without the full members of the electoral college present, the president can not be elected.
Interesting thing to know here is that the Supreme Court of Pakistan has no problem with the issues raised by the opposition.
And Musharraf’s opponent, Wajihuddin Ahmed has said that the presidential elections, in which Musharraf made a clean sweep, were rigged. Interesting thing to note here is that this is the statement every loser throughout the world makes when he…er…loses. What a bunch of hypocrites!
