A man died, leaving behind 3 sons and 17 camels. His will stated that the camels were to be distributed in the following manner: half to the oldest son, one-third to the second oldest and one-ninth to the youngest. The question that arose now was how to divide 17 camels in such a way so as to satisfy the terms of his will. Many a people tried but all efforts were futile. Finally the case was brought to Ali(A.S.)
Ali first added one of his own camels to the lot. This brought the total number to 18. He then gave half to the oldest son i.e. 9 camels. Then he gave one-third to the second son i.e. 6 camels. In the end, he gave one-ninth to the youngest son i.e. 2 camels.
9 + 6 + 2 = 17
Then he took his own camel back!
